Epimedium has been a part of traditional
Chinese medicine for hundreds of years. Chinese doctors
have prescribed it's use for numerous ailments but is
most famous for it's use as an aphrodisiac. Research suggest
that epimedium has effects on improving sexual performance
and desire.
Individuals have report increased sexual satisfaction
with epimedium as well.
There are two popular extracting methods for epimedium.
One using water which is often heated to high temperatures
and pressures and the other using alchohol to extract
with. lcariin is thought to be the main active constituent,
therefore extracts are tested to assure they contain high
levels. A measure of a high lcariin level is also good
indicator that there are high levels of other actives.
A low lcariin level suggests the other actives are in
lesser amounts. Some websites
may say the actives levels are different in water and alcohol
epimedium extracts. They are right. The water
extracts are generally less potent since hot water is
not as good a solvent as alcohol. Water extracts are
also a less expensive product since water does not cost
near as much as alcohol.
